Plants: Care & Maintenance

Dracaena Plant Group

The Dracaenas are false palms, their leafless trunks and leaf crown giving a Palm like appearance, but in fact these are totally unrelated to the true Palm.

These plants have become a favourite by interior designers for giving a contemporary feel to a room. The Dracaena Plant now nearly out sells all other foliage plants.

Homecare:

  • Temperature: Average warmth approx: 12c
  • Light: Light shade but does depend of variety of Dracaena plant
  • Water: Keep compost moist at all times but reduce in winter
  • Humidity: Mist regularly

Warning signs to watch out for

  • Leaves with bleached dry patched: The plant is getting too much light.
  • Leaves with brown spots: Underwatering
  • Leaves with yellow edges and brown tips: It’s too dry or is in a draught
  • Leaves are soft and curled with brown edges: Too cold
  • Yellowing of lower leaves: It’s the natural aging process. Each leaf will dy after about 2 years
  • Death of my Plant: 2 reasons
  • Too much watering in winter
  • Plant kept too cold

Poinsettia Plant (Euphorbia pulcherrima)

This plant has recently become a symbol of the Christmas period. Once in your home the plant should be put in a well lit spot away from draughts and always kept reasonably warm

Homecare

  • Temperature: Average warmth in 12-15c
  • Light: As much light as possible but protect from strong summer sun/heat
  • Water: Water liberally until compost is damp
  •  Humidity: Mist often,

Warning signs to watch out for

  • Loss of Flower heads and Leaf edges browning: Too dry air – mist more regularly
  • Loss of Leaves following wilting: Over or under watering. The top of the compost needs to be dry but roots still damp(ish) before re-watering.
  •  Loss of leaves without wilting: Too cold or poor light.

YUCCA

The Yucca is another False Palm and it perfect for a hallway or large room. This plant will require a deep and well draining container. This plant love lots of light and in summer can be moved outside, but in winter it likes a cool place indoors with plenty of light. Also watch out for white bell-shaped flowers which may appear after a number of years of good care.

Homecare:

  • Temperature: Average warmth in summer, but keep cool in winter min room temp of 7c
  • Light: As much light as possible
  • Water: Water liberally from late spring to early autumn, but sparingly in winter.
  • Humidity: Misting is unnecessary

Acknowledgements

We have been dealing with plants for 18 years and in that time we have collated a vast amount of experience but I have to acknowledge one book as a corner stone of knowledge.

  • ‘The House Plant Expert’ by Dr D.G. Hessayon. published by Transworld Publishers 2002

It is now company policy to ensure all staff members of access to this book and has become an important part of our knowledge base. Thus, if you want a one stop book for all your planting needs I can highly recommend the above.
